The Story of a Woman Sacrificed to PatriarchyCalon Arang is a character in Javanese and Balinese folklore from the 12th century. The story about The King (Airlangga), The Witch (Calon Arang) and The Priest (Mpu Baradah) . Calon Arang who live in Girah village, in the kingdom of Daha has beautiful daughter (Ratna Manggali) , but couldn't find a husband since nobody wanted a witch for a mother-in-law. This made the witch anger and spreading pestilence and decease through the kingdom. With the help from Mpu Baradah and his student (Mpu Bahula) who married to Ratna Manggali as part of strategy to know Calon Arang weakness, Calon Arang finally defeated.
Although in most version said that Calon Arang very bad person but in other proprotion she also symbol a Woman Sacrificed to Patriarchy (Toety Heraty's book). This is related to position of women to politics and male dominace. During that time, the power of Calon Arang may been seen as a threat the kingdom and should be dimmed and eliminated

Tektekan is a scared mystical dance is created by A.A.Ngurah Oka Silagunadha in 1967 based on Calon Arang story and accompanies with bamboo orchestra. Traditionally this sacred procession aims to purify the community, bring about fertility, and to drive out the evil. No wonder the mystical aura cover all the procession.
